PONTLLANFRAITH 29 – 5 BLAENAVON

With a bad loss last Saturday against coach Tony Jayne‘s old outfit Brynithel, the boys were looking to the first home game of the season to turn things around. The day couldn’t have been more perfect, a new Pont kit was issued, along with post match polo shirts sponsored by Specsavers Blackwood and warm up tops were given out courtesy of Sportfix Ltd who supply and maintain sports equipment and also offer professional advice and service at competitive prices. To top it all off the sun was shining.

The growing front row partnership of Dan welsh, Nathan Meyrick and Rob Protheroe continued with Lee Fortey and captain Bleddyn Jones making up the second row. The back row was made up of first timer Paul Harvey, second timer Dan Brimble and old timer Vince welsh. The enthusiastic Aaron Farmer was this week partnered by Chris Miles in the half back positions and Ashley Cockerill joined vice captain Lee butcher in the centre. The back line was made of young Lewis Young and Aaron Romanic on the wings with Martin Gregg at full back.

From the kick off Pont meant business but failed to gain much possession in the first ten minutes, however the boys had worked hard in training on defence with new backs coach Roger K9 and it paid off. Blaenavon couldn’t break through and went behind after giving a penalty away 3-0 to the Pont. The Fraith then started to put phases together and attacked the Blaenavon line. Big Dan Brimble eventually barged his way over for a well deserved try. The enthusiastic boys in blue hit the ground running in the second half and it wasn’t long before the bruising landscaper Aaron Romanic went over for his first in a Pont jersey with Chris Miles missing the conversion. With the scrum and lineout now functioning well Pont started to dominate the game and a turnover at 60 minutes allowed the talented Vince welsh to gather on the 22 and go in under the posts. Blaenavon now upped their game and put pressure on the home side eventually leading to a try from a good lineout move. Pont then bounced back by scoring what could be a contender for try of the season. Centre Lee butcher taking the ball up as he had done all game followed by some excellent inter-passing leading to a fine try for Aaron Bambi Farmer to pick up the clubs first bonus point in… ever. As the ref’s whistle blew for full time a big cheer went from Pont’s long suffering supporters and players alike. And a fine night was had by all.
